  • Interconnections: Describe three interconnections that came alive for you during this course

    $5.00

This course has been not only about getting to know the ways in which the University and your colleagues can support you in your program of study and exploring the essential components of the early childhood field, but also about becoming aware of the important role that interconnections play in your growth as a professional; children’s growth into healthy, competent adults; and the growth of the early childhood field in its ability to support, lead, and advocate for the well-being of young children and their families. In other words, you, young children, and the field of early childhood do not exist in isolation. It is through meaningful reciprocal relationships that development and learning take place.
This week’s multimedia presentation, “Interconnections, Part III,” illustrates interconnections among the early childhood field, you, your colleagues, Walden University, and the MSECS program. This Discussion offers the opportunity to review and evaluate this new set of interconnections along with the entire “web” of interconnections, and to consider the personal and professional meaning that some of these interconnections represent for you.
In preparation for the Discussion, consider the following questions:
    • In what ways do you feel connected to and supported by Walden University and your colleagues? In what ways do you hope these interconnections will grow?
    • Which of the possible interconnections between this course, and your program of study, as underscored in the multimedia presentation, have come alive for you most clearly?
    • Which of the interconnections provided you with new and meaningful information about the early childhood field and your role in it?

Your task is to post the following:
    • Describe three interconnections that came alive for you during this course; provide specific examples.
    • Explain how each of these interconnections contributed to your professional and personal growth.

MAE 596 DB1- Current Issues Related to Your Concentration of Study

How do the critical issues in your program of study influence the portfolio that you will put together? Identify and discuss current issues related to your concentration area or to your profession.

Note: A good resource for information on current events is often the news. Please feel free to bring your findings/questions/inquiries raised from it.

****My program of study is Education, concentration in Training and Development****

Below are 2 current issues that could be used for this assignment. I copied verbatim information from the internet. Please be careful to rephrase anything that is used in the discussion board.

Understanding Social Media. Companies are quickly embracing social media tools, as well as investing in social collaboration tools to better engage employees and foster a learning culture. Although social has become mainstream, companies still lack the knowledge and insight around how to use these tools for learning and development. Of the 59 percent of companies using social for their learning strategies, only 24 percent say they are effective. One reason is that companies are limited in the social tools they are using. Companies are using document sharing, discussion forms, and blogs, but they aren’t generally using video or micro-blogs—which our research shows are more effective—to improve their learning functions. Companies must educate themselves on the value of social learning and invest in providers that offer solutions that drive business outcomes.

Considering Adaptive Learning. Adaptive learning is a methodology that breaks traditional models and allows employees to learn at their own pace. It has gained popularity with educational institutions, referred to as “adaptive teaching,” where a teacher will gather information on individual students to learn what they need to do to improve their learning. In the workforce, adaptive learning is conducted similarly. Employees can be monitored individually and in real time to determine what learning approach will best suit their needs. It has advantages for younger generations entering the workforce that have expectations around flexibility and interaction. Adaptive learning can be effective at improving efficiency, as well as employee engagement and retention since it allows employees to build confidence and overall expertise. Companies may want to consider breaking traditional learning methods by introducing aspects of adaptive learning.

Counter-intuitive properties of infinite sets for a lay audience – SURPRISES IN SUM OF INFINITE SETS

you will try to describe some counter-intuitive properties of infinite sets for a lay audience.[if !supportFootnotes][1][endif]  Think of as an article that might appear in a popular magazine devoted to science or as an article in a Sunday paper. You may assume your audience has a background in precalculus mathematics but no calculus.

The Blocks Unlimited store sells various sets of toy blocks.  One set, called the Deluxe Set, consists of infinitely many cubes, the first of which is 1 ft. by 1ft. by 1ft., the second cube has edge length 1/2 ft, the third has edge length 1/3 ft, and the nth cube has edge length 1/n ft. A second set of blocks, called the Starter Set, is a subset of the Deluxe Set.  It consists of infinitely many cubes, the first of which has edge length 1 ft, the second has edge length 1/2 ft, the third has edge length 1/4 ft, and the nth cube in the Starter Set has edge length 1/2n-1 ft.

Give a convincing argument that if all the blocks in the Deluxe Set were stacked one on top of the other, then the stack would extend beyond Alpha Centauri but that it is possible to pack the Deluxe Set into a box that would be small enough to easily fit inside the trunk of a sports car. Since the Starter Set is a subset of the Deluxe Set, it could be packed in the same box used for the Deluxe Set. Argue that if the cubes in the Starter Set were stacked one on top of another, then the stack would be not very high at all and the exact height of this stack can be determined.

The examples given in the previous paragraph are to be discussed in detail in 1. You should include  some additional examples of your own creation or a discussion of one or more of the following topics:

    1. a) The cubes in the sets are sold unpainted. The Blocks Unlimited store also sells a special paint that can be used to paint these cubes. The paint is special because it has zero thickness. This paint is sold by the square foot. Compute how many square feet of paint one would need to buy in order to paint all the faces of all the cubes in the Starter Set.
    1. b) Estimate how many square feet of paint one would need to buy in order to paint all the faces of all the cubes in the Deluxe Set.
    1. c) If instead of painting the entire cube, suppose only a thin stripe is painted on one edge of each cube of the Deluxe Set. Now suppose the cubes are stacked one on top of another so the stripes along the edges lineup. As you argue, this stripe would be arbitrarily long. Estimate how many square feet of special paint would be needed to paint this stripe. Would an infinite number of square feet of paint be needed?
    1. d) Can you explain the apparent paradoxes?

You may assume your reader knows basic algebra and will remember, when reminded, formulas for geometric series. However, the reader does not know about definite integrals or about divergent series. Thus, the challenge in writing is to justify the claims about these sets of blocks using only the mathematics the reader already knows.

This assignment is a minor variant on earlier assignments of Baldwin, Berman and Radford and is based eventually on an exercise in Writing in the teaching and learning of mathematics, J. Meier and T. Rishel, MAA 1998.

    LEGAL ASPECTS OF HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT
    FINAL PAPER HANDOUT

Twenty-five per cent of your course grade will be based on the final paper. The purpose of this hand out is to give you guidance on the following matters relating to it:
1.) General philosophy behind this course requirement
    2.) Topic guidance
    3.) Grading criteria
General Philosophy Behind This Course Requirement
The main idea behind doing the term paper is to give you the opportunity to personally relate the information studied in the course to you career goals as well as to simulate a “real world” dynamic. It is not meant to be a mechanical exercise where you are required to grind out eight or more pages of dispassionate text.
In the “real world” you will most likely be working for an entity in the hospitality industry where you have a boss or a direct supervisor who assigns you projects. Sometimes those projects are very task specific and defined for you. More often than not, they are assignments that will require you to exercise your creativity, resourcefulness and ingenuity. This is what gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your worth to your employer. It gets you raises, promotions and the opportunity to advance.
Most of you want to be hospitality managers. As such, you are being hired to solve problems your boss does not want to confront, is not equipped to confront or simply does not have time to confront. When you are given a project, in addition to having to meet certain goals your boss is also saying, “Lighten MY burden and impress me with the results.” He/she does not expect to do the project for you or spoon feed you step by step directions. Although a reasonable amount of initial direction is necessary, ultimately your boss does not want to be absorbed in the project. That is one of the reasons he hired you.
A classroom environment does not directly lend itself to this dynamic. However, the goal of doing the term paper is an attempt to replicate it. You are being given very broad instructions and asked to use your mind to produce creative, original work product. Thus, your assignment is to research and create paper of no less than eight pages using a minimum of four outside sources on a topic of your choice that relates to the hospitality industry related legal concepts we’ve covered and your career goals. That’s it. There is no right and there is no wrong topic so long it falls within this broad parameter.

    Topic Guidance
Choosing a topic, narrowing it and determining where to get information may pose some difficulty at first. Asking yourself why you are a hospitality management major may give you direction. We’ve had students who want to become event planners, open bistros, manage a bed and breakfast, work at an airline, etc. Whatever your goal is, you will be forced to confront many of the legal issues presented in this course as you pursue it. Write about how they relate to these goals. We’ve also had students grapple with a topic that seems too large such as “The legal aspects of starting a restaurant.” This can be reduced to a manageable size by choosing several legal topics related to starting a restaurant and focusing on those at the expense of the multitude of others. Some options for research sources include conducting live interviews, use of the Internet, legal pamphlets by regulatory agencies, etc. Overall, you are given great latitude in choosing your thesis and how to research it because we want the paper to be personalized.
    Grading Criteria
Often students are unsure of how they will be evaluated on the paper. It is a subjective evaluation. There is no way around that. However, in our attempt to relate this project to the real world we’ve found it best to remind students of the saying, “You get an ‘A’ for effort.” Generally, if you boss gives you a project even if you don’t do it to his/her complete satisfaction, if you demonstrate solid effort, originality, resourcefulness, etc. this will be recognized and valued. It’s the same with your term paper. If you hand in a paper that uses wide margins, is merely a summary of the class text, and is not proofread, do not expect to do well. Trust us, you would not get a raise or promotion for submitting work product that communicates disinterest and laziness to your boss. However, if you present a well researched, original, personalized paper that is a “good read,” you will do very well. Treat the project as if you are competing against coworkers for a promotion. Stand out from the crowd in terms of effort and quality.
By analogy, an A means you get a promotion because you exceeded the expectations of your bossyour effort and work product shined above the others, a B means you completed the task as assigned and did a decent job, a C means you did less than what was required and it shows.start looking for another job, a D means you are on probation with a slim chance of being asked back and an F means you were fired.
    Good luck!
