  • Dealing with Disruptive physician situation

    Now that you have things under control and the staff is beginning to understand your style and your capabilities, they come to you, at their wits end because of a disruptive physician.  They tell you that he is demanding and dismissive.  He has been known to “fly off the handle” at the littlest things.  One day, he found out by opening the supply cabinet that his favorite pens were out of stock.  He proceeded to berate the Front Desk staff in front of other staff and patients.

  • Clinic’s Social Media Policy

    Over the past few weeks, you have become more familiar with your staff and are beginning to feel like part of their family.  To that end, you have recently accepted some “friend requests” on Facebook from some of the staff.  You were at home last night, getting caught up on Facebook when you came across a post from one of the employees that said:

    • Should you have accepted the friend request in the first place? Why or why not?
    • Remember, you are not in a co-worker relationship with this person, you are in a supervisor-subordinate relationship.
    • Should you remain friends on social media?
    • Can we initiate disciplinary action on this employee?
    • Based on this, the Board of Trustees wants us to establish a Social Medial Policy. Can we do this?  If so,  I need you to provide me with a draft Social Media Policy.

    Just as you were trying to get a handle on the week’s events, and hoping for a relatively quiet day, one of your front desk staff calls you. The issue here is that a Patient has arrived and they are late for their appointment. They are pleading with your front desk clerk, stating that they had a flat tire and their cell phone battery died…they could not call. The patient wants to speak to the boss.

    Our clinic policy states that if more than 50% of the appointment time has elapsed, the patient will not be seen. 10 minutes of the 20 minute appointment has elapsed. What do you see as your options in this case? What is your decision here? How do we ensure that the patients are familiar with our policy regarding late arrivals? What staff did you interact with?   • Highly influential member of the community with Syphilis

    This week you discovered that test results for a highly recognizable/highly influential member of the community came back positive for Syphilis.  Our Lab Technician as well as the Physician of record decided not to do anything or say anything in an attempt to protect the patient.   Are there mandatory reporting requirements that we have?

    Are we required to report to the CDC (Center for Disease Control)?   Are we required to report to the Florida Department of Health?  If so, what is the administrative law that governs this?  Do I need to be aware of any other laws?  Please tell me about any forms that should have been filled out.  Which of our employees was responsible for the state reporting piece? What rights does the patient have in this process?

    Both the lab tech and physician are top performers for us.  What HR action (if any) will you take regarding the way they handled this situation?

    Description of the Senior Research Project

    The senior project is taken near the end of the student’s degree program after completion of the 40.5 units of core required courses for the major, and after completion of six or more of the elective courses.
    The objective of the capstone course is to produce a paper or creative project that is exemplified by extensive research, critical thought, and intellectual engagement. The project should excite students and deepen their sociological understanding. As a “senior project,” it will require students to identify a research or creative project, develop a research question, choose an appropriate method for studying the problem, and adopt a theoretical perspective to explain the issue. Grading is H, S, or U only.

    Goals of the Senior Project

    The purposes of this course are to provide students with the opportunity to acquire and demonstrate the skills involved in developing and designing a viable research project; collecting and analyzing data; evaluating research data and drawing conclusions; make an oral presentation of research findings; and applying the APA format.

    Course Learning Outcomes of the Senior Project

    Each student must present the findings of his or her research project to the instructor and peers in an open forum.  The presentation is approximately 20 minutes in duration.
