Guidelines: This assignment requires you to post an original thought and respond to one of your classmates thoughts. In total, you will need to make two posts. Topic: The setting is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) located in rural, western Kansas. There are approximately 30 people on staff. Two of these staff are physicians, about 20 are nurses who work rotating shifts, and the remaining eight hold various administrative positions. The FQHC provides mainly primary care services although they do have an x-ray machine so can handle uncomplicated sprains, bone breaks, etc. The FQHC serves a diverse population but includes mostly farmers and their extended families, Native Americans, and migrant workers. The FQHC has decided to hire a community outreach worker that will work in the community to inform and connect people with available services. They have hired you as a consultant to help them with the hiring process. They tell you that the community outreach worker must have a college degree and familiarity with the health care industry. They must be friendly and approachable, and able to build trust with people in the community. They prefer someone who has experience working with Native American and/or migrant farm workers but it is not essential. They also prefer someone who is bilingual.

Key tasks will be: 1) traveling throughout the county to the various farms and reservations to inform people about the FQHC services; 2) determine what kind of services people might need and help them schedule appointments; and 3) distribute preventive health information particularly on diabetes and heart disease which are major issues in the community.

Original Post They have already posted the job and collected a stack of applications. Your job is to develop for them a set of 10 questions they will use to interview their top 5 candidates so they can make a decision. Your interview questions should include 5 situational questions and 5 experience-based questions that are relevant to the position and will help them gather more information about the candidate. They have also asked that you recommend any pre or post-employment testing that should occur.

In 1918, an influenza pandemic that originated with avian flu killed 50 million people. Researchers isolated samples of that virus from bodies of infected people preserved in Alaskan permafrost since 1918. From the samples, they sequenced the viral genome, and then reconstructed the virus. The reconstructed virus is 39,000 times more infectious than modern influenza strains, and 100 percent lethal in mice. Understanding how this virus works can help us defend ourselves against other deadly influenza strains that arise. For example, discovering what makes it so infectious would help researchers design more effective vaccines. Consider this statement: Critics of the research are concerned that if the virus escapes the containment facilities (even though it has not done so yet), it might cause another pandemic. Worse, terrorists could use the published DNA sequence and methods to make the virus for horrific purposes. Determine whether or not you believe this research makes us more or less safe, and explain why. Propose at least one (1) other application these discoveries could be used for.

Assignment 2: Bad News Message – Draft Version

Write a bad newsletter to a customer who has requested an exemption to a company’s policy. The message should take the “form” of a letter.

Choose a scenario:

• A request for a refund or replacement of a $1,000 piece of equipment that broke after three (3) years, one (1) year past the warranty date.

• A request for a refund or voucher for a ruined two-week vacation (due to bad weather: rain or snow) at an expensive resort.

• A request to change a company’s “no-pets indoors” policy to a “pet-friendly” policy to allow customers to bring pets inside the restaurant and allow them to sit at tables with their owners.

• A request to change a company’s “pet-friendly” policy to a “no-pet” policy to prohibit customers from bringing their pets into the restaurant’s eating areas – inside or outside.

• Other: Write a bad news message based on another scenario.

Format the letter properly:

• Include “to” and “from” addresses and the date.
• Include appropriate greeting and salutation.
• Use bullets as needed to emphasize key points.

Show appreciation and concern for the customer from the beginning (possibly with a brief buffer) and throughout the letter. Avoid being overly apologetic or complimentary.

Provide the turndown or bad news early in the letter.

Make the turndown clear and support it by providing two (2) to three (3) key reasons for the turndown.

Provide an alternative and / or a positive expectation of a future with the customer.
